One of the performances (a collaboration with Australian, Thai and US sex workers) rejects the rescues a misinformed strategy often used by large US funded organisations working in South East Asia. Thai and migrant sex workers are rescued from a brothel only to be taken to another location where they are held against their will by US funded organisations who are saving the women. Many of the women escape and return to the brothels fearing the retraining (sometimes for as long as 9 months) they will be forced to endure at the hands of their rescuers.
Five Australian Sex Workers had their films and performances showcased as part of the 4th San Francisco Sex Worker Film Festival. (Photograph: Scarlot Harlot - Director of festival, Image by Decriminalise Debby).
The week also included forums, tours and training sessions as sex worker rights activists from around the US and the world discuss law reform models and the outcomes. Decriminalisation has clearly been the call by sex workers from around the world. The Australian 'Debby Doesn't Do It for Free' performers are also appearing throughout the week.
